Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and engaging.   April 10, 2000
This is a very good book. Frye turns the formidable literary skills he is so well-known for from works on Shakespeare, Blake and others to the literature and art of his own country in a collection of essays that well serve to capture what he sees as central to the Canadian imaginative psyche. Ranging from poetry reviews to essays on the Narrative tradition in Canada to meditations on the paintings of Tom Thomson, Lawren Harris and David Milne to prefaces for anthologies that were never collected, Frye explores the themes and images that pull the artistic endeavours of a young country together. Throughout, he employs the wit, insight and scholarship he is so well known for in other circles. A fine introduction to the art and literature of Canada, as well as a pleasant, "casual" way to discover (or to better get to know) the thought of this excellent critic and thinker. Don't dwell too long on the "Letters in Canada" section, but give lots of time to the essays that follow. You'll be rewarded!
