Unfortunately, this price guide was written before the recent increases in fuel prices so the payback periods are way over the top. The continuing increases in world fuel prices mean that the payback periods for all the items will be much shorter than quoted.
It is still true that insulation and draught proofing will give a much better payback, but solar hot water and photo voltaic systems now look a much better bet. How the RICS can give small scale wind turbines a higher star rating than solar hot water of electricity, I don't know, as most researchers and technical journals are saying that small scale wind power does not work when fixed to roofs, except in very special locations.
And there is no account taken of Global Warming and the reductions required under the Kyoto agreement. If you are concerned about Global Warming and Climate Change, the more you can do, the more it will help.

If you are thinking about 'going green' then this book will be invaluable.
The book looks at all the different 'green' home improvements you might be interested in from simply improving insualation through to installing solar panels.
It says in simple terms what the different technologies might do.
Then comes the interesting stuff.
- What will it cost?
- How much disruption to my home will it cause?
- How much energy will it save me (in cash terms)
- How long will it take to pay for itself (payback period)
There is a useful star rating which gives a quick snapshot of the relative benefits of the different technologies.
Generally the simple things such as extra insulation come out well but anything with moving parts begins to look less attractive when considered in the round.
An excellent title. Should inform the debate about green technologies and provide a good pointer on what will and won't save you money.
