Dreadful, poorly constructed and badly written book with an unsympathetic and annoying protagonist who had no redeeming features, instantly forgettable supporting characters, endlessly boring dialogue and a reveal of 'Midsomer Murders' quality involving a person you didn't even know existed until close to the end!
The introduction of an entirely new sub-plot (apparently to explain the main character's behaviour) with only a few chapters to go seemed ridiculous to me, particularly as it could have easily been elaborated upon and used for another novel. In fact, that plot was potentially more interesting than pretty much everything that had preceeded it in this book! As it was, it was far too rushed and seemed to have been crammed on to the end of the story almost as an afterthought.
I shan't be reading another book by this author again, unless I'm truly desperate!
Snowed Out ! December 28, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am 2/3rds of the way through this book, and couldn't care less, since I wont be reading another boring page of it. That is very rare for me. Usually when I persevere with a book, I find that the perseverance pays off. Not with Alex Barclay's latest novel "Blood Runs Cold". The book itself would make anyone's blood run cold, as digesting it takes an awful lot of hard work, and leaves you rigid with monotony. I wont go into the ins and outs, as there are readers who will no doubt like it. All I can say is that it is neither a thriller, a murder mystery, or indeed a crime novel ( given the lack of crimes within it ). Just don't pick this book up if you haven't got anything else to do with your spare time. Life is too short.!
puzzle book December 16, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I think this book is about the development of a self-destructive character, but nothing is certain. There is a rather slow plot about a dead FBI agent, and some sub-tales about other mystery deaths, one of which is solved by a dog. The explanations at the end, which are supposed to make all clear, in this case make everything even more murky, seeming to introduce several more plots than we had before. The dialogue throughout consists largely of personal insults, no doubt supposed to be amusing, but turning out boring in the very long run. Some credit for character building.
