You never know what's in your garden February 15, 2008 Ellie agrees to supervise the re-modelling of her neighbours' garden. But all does not run smoothly when the excavations for a pond uncover a body. Trying to recall all the people who have lived in the area forces Ellie to confront demons in her own past. Kate and Armand whose garden it is, are faced with a choice of living with the thought that a murderer lived in their house or a murder was committed in the garden, and wonder whether to move. Ellie's life may be in danger and she must try to solve the mystery and solve the murder because the police think she had something to do with it. Ellie's network of friends is increasing and she realises she can call on other people when she needs to. Realistic characters and a topical plot lift this cosy mystery out of the norm.
Not as good as the others January 24, 2005 1 out of 5 found this review helpful
I felt that the plot this time was weak, and the characters are a little sterotyped. Also the time scale of all 5 mysteries happening in one year is a little incredible. In the next novel I feel an affair with the vicar could liven things up

This is the latest book in Veronica Heley's Ellie Quicke murder mysteries. Widowed in her 50's Ellie has to learn to fend for herself and her character develops with each book. Her struggle to come to terms with life on her own is very real and with each book she gets a little tougher and less put upon by other people. And of course, she solves a murder each time with a blend of common sense and observation. All the characters are wonderfully described - the ghastly daughter, wicked old aunt who turns out to be a friend, the local church congregation etc. You get to know them better with each book and think "I know someone like that!". Veronica builds the suspense brilliantly and you are kept guessing who the murderer is right till the last couple of pages which is how all good murder mysteries should be. Her observations of life and people are first class and the story is very believable. Ellie lives in Ealing in West London which is where I live so this makes the books more interesting. But the best thing of all is that Veronica Heley is a neighbour and lives at the bottom of my road! She is a delightful grey-haired retired lady and is the last person you would think could have all these wonderful plots in her head!I can't wait for the next one.
