What a brilliant guiding light September 29, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have always enjoyed Laurence Llewelyn Bowen's TV creations - they always look "right." But it is very difficult trying to copy his ideas in ones own space - that is, until I read this book. It is fantastic, explaining the reason why the eye enjoys looking at certain scenes and not others. He gives so much information on effects of light, its direction and quality; textures that absorb and reflect light; sizes, in relation to the room and pieces of furniture and decoration; colours, how they work together and apart, etc. etc. A joy to read and even more fun applying his basics to my own designs. Thank you Laurence.
Explaining the Rules May 23, 2004 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
An excellent book for those embarking on Interior Design for the first time or for those with some experience to remind them of the simple rules!Laurence L-B has written a comprehensive guide here which should keep us all on the way to a beautiful and interesting home. He has a vast knowledge of the subject and related areas and this is a really good read.
design rules - from the BBC TV series August 11, 2003 59 out of 61 found this review helpful
There's an abundance of interior desgin programs on TV - perhaps rivaling the gardening programmes - but this, for me is very different. Whereas the others show us the transformation of a house, Laurence does something a little different: he EXPLAINS what is happening; he gives us the underlying principle in action. I like to see the concept behind the idea, and not just a series of ideas. (Those familiar with Myers-Briggs typing will underatand this as strong iNtuition type.) If you think like this too then this book is up your alley. If you missed the series, get this book: if you saw the series, there are still more gems here to help make your home more beautiful to live in.
